Nice mobo, good bang for the buck at the time
By Julio E. Tonidandel
I guess I purchased this mobo from Amazon about 2 months ago, and decided to write this review only now. Reviews are important to me, since they help decide whether to buy or not, besides having some nice hints eventually.Well, I do not actually remember how much I paid for it, but it was a great deal at the time, as it was one of the cheapest X58 mobos advertised here at Amazon. For those of you expecting to buy this same product, please bear in mind that it might have some overheating issues at the northbridge. According to Intel's specs, the northbridge can handle temps up to 100 degrees celsius, if I am not mistaken. Mine was hitting like 75 degrees at idle and nearly 85 degrees at full load. I was kind of worried, once I intended to do some overclocking later on. When I did, temps were way too high and very close to the limit of 100 degrees celsius. Then, I started googling abouth the mobo, and found out many other people had the same issue. Some sorted it out by installing a fan direclty over the northbridge heatsink, others left it as it was, and some dettached the heatsink and reapplied a good (Artic Silver 5) thermal compound. I chose the latter, and had my heatsink removed and the compound reapplied. It was not enough, as the screws (springs) that held the heatsink were not tighten enough, so the heatsink was not actually touching the northbridge chip. Replaced those springs by real screws and tightened the heatsinkg firmly. Temps dropped a lot, now I have 63 degrees celsius at idle, and nearly 69 degrees at full load. Note, however, that this procedure might invalidate your warranty, as you are violating the original state of the product. Guess MSI will not accept claims if you do it and something goes wrong.Apart from this heating problem, the mobo is great. Have it running a i7 920 processor and 12GB of RAM. Overclocking is easy and I feel safe to do it now, as temps are good enough. You might have some freezings or lockups some times, and they might be RAM related. Had to raise the voltage of the RAM a little, and everything is running like a charm now.I would have rated the mobo at 5 stars, if I did not have so much trouble to work around the heat and RAM issues. If you are not patient enough for googling and trying to troubleshoot eventual problems, I recommend not buying this motherboard, since several other people had the same issues which means it is some sort of MSI's manufacturing fault.Amazon, as usual, is great at delivery times. No complaints about that. I live in Brazil and a friend of mine brought the product for me after a trip to the US. I just bought at Amazon and had it delivered to his address while he was there.

Nothing but trouble
By tmav
I've used this board for over a year. I've had nothing but trouble with the Intel ICH10R Raid as one hard drive constantly falls out of mirror. Also, tried using it with RME Fireface 800 audio card and the onboard Firewire chipset caused audio to constantly glitch. Installed a PCI Firewire card that fixed the problem. I recently got tired of the Raid issue so RMA'd the board back to MSI who sent out a beat up looking board and found the front panel mic jack does not work. I'm currently waiting on a second RMA. The reason I bought MSI is because my old computer ran like a champ. Unfortunately, due to this experience, it will be my last MSI board.

Pro's and Con's
By Michael Garcia
I bought this a couple weeks ago, and after I plugged everything in, I turned on the computer and started installing windows, I left to go to Subway and came back to the computer off. I was puzzled and when I turned it on again it started pillowing smoke out of the case... From the video card!! I immediately pulled the power and examined everything. Turns out the SATA cables that are included with this motherboard have metal clips and the positioning of where slot 1SATA plugs in, to which slot I put my $500+ video card it made contact with the video card and grounded out on the video card. Needless to say my video card was shot. Thank God nothing else was damaged. But major design flaw. Metal clips on SATA cables FTL...Not to mention the pins came bent on the cpu slot, I bent them back, because I didn't want to wait another week to build my computer. So just don't use the SATA Cables that come with it, or anything that is conductive on the clip for that matter.
