For experienced builders, a good board!
By D. Christensen
I was actually hoping to buy a Biostar T series, but settled for my fallback brand Gigabyte as that was what was available at the time. Overall I love the features and performance of this board. It does have some odd quirks though.I wish someone (hardware expert) would write a detailed technical review so I'd have a better understanding of the various USB chips on this thing. It is USB overload! But the situation I ran into was kind of a catch-22, until I figured out that it only affected certain USB ports.Basically, you need to adjust BIOS settings before installing Windows 7.To do that, you need a keyboard.Just about all keyboards are USB now.Certain USB ports on this board don't work until after the operating system is installed and drivers (for the USB ports) are installed on top of that. For a while I was certain I had defective USB ports. This is the first board I can remember where the USB wouldn't work for a keyboard, a USB wireless adapter, an external USB sound card or anything else...Before the operating system was installed and all drivers updated properly! That kind of confused me for a while. From what I can tell...There are USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, both physical on the outside and (more connectors on the motherboard). For the 2.0 ports, there appears to be at least 2 (two) different chips running them. ONE Of those chips is useless until the proper driver is installed. That's my best theory anyway. Out of the box, some USB 2.0 ports would work, some wouldn't.Now I've got all USB ports working fine.Oh, I get a 5.6 for WEI score, the lowest is my hard drive performance. I'm using a A6-3500 with graphics drivers (A6-3600) downloaded straight from AMD. That last sentence is not a typo, BTW. The A6-3500 requires the "A6-3600" drivers. It's a little cranky right out of the box, which is why I'd recommend it for experienced builders only. But no real complaints. I LOVE the fact that there are so many USB ports! If I used all the connectors, I'd have something like 14-16 USB ports available. AWESOME. I used one PCI bracket (running off of the motherboard) to add two USB 2.0 ports. For now, I'm running 6 physical USB 2.0 ports (almost all in constant use) and a couple of USB 3.0 ports. While this board is a bit large for HTPC use...an experienced builder could turn this board into anything from a over-powered office workstation to a high-end gaming system. I made it into an over-powered office workstation.- this motherboard- A6-3500 APU- OCZ ModXStream 500W power supply- Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600 RAM 4GB (2 X 2GB)- 250GB Western Digital notebook hard drive 5400RPM (an extra I had on hand)- LG DVD burner- Airlink external USB wireless adapter- External USB speakers- External USB hard drives- USB wireless mouse- USB wireless keyboard- Windows 7 Professional 64-bit- Monitor is an LG HDTV (HDMI) for the moment
