Great motherboard
By Clarence
I purchased this motherboard (from Amazon) before the first reviewer posted his review, so when he said this board doesn't work with the Ivy Bridge processor I was worried. My Intel i7 3770k Ivy Bridge worked great, however. It booted up immediately with no problem. I have no idea what issue the other reviewer was having.I picked this motherboard because it seemed like one of the most recent releases, which I assumed would have the latest and greatest technologies, and hopefully minimal design flaws.Looks: Very nice looking in my Corsair 600t. Very clean and well colored. Internal headers are in decent spots, except for the CPU power connection (it is at the top of the board which gets in the way of my watercooler).Function: Boot up worked great. The diagnostic LEDs next to each component were great for helping me identify why the system wouldn't boot at first (I didn't jam the memory sticks in hard enough). Board gets pretty hot while gaming (70c on the on-board heat sinks). I put a side fan in the case to blow directly on the board heat sinks, which seems to help a little. I imagine its like a cool breeze on a hot day, which I am guessing the motherboard appreciates as much as I do. I haven't tested thunderbolt. All the internal headers seem to work well. Haven't played with the Bios or overclocking and I doubt I will much. No problem hooking up my components.I did have a few problems:(1) The wifi-go module has a tiny screw you have to remove before installing it. For some reason the screw wouldn't come out with any of the 6 Phillips head screwdrivers I tried. So I just used a pair of pliers to grip it hard and turn it slowly. Came out fine with that method. But for some reason the head on the tiny screw they use with it just didn't match my screwdrivers. Like other reviewers have said on similar motherboards, make sure you remember to install the wifi-go module before installing the motherboard. I haven't tested the module to see if it works.(2) The nipple on my case wouldn't match up easily with the hole on the motherboard. I have no idea if that is the motherboard's fault or the case's fault. I had to really jam it hard to get it the nipple in the hole.(3) A consumer support rep at Asus said (in typical broken English in an email) that this board does not work with Vista "duo (sic, he meant "due") to the chipset limitation." I installed Vista anyway and it works fine. I don't know why he would say Vista doesn't work, but, if anyone is wondering, I didn't have a problem with it.(4) It is expensive, but I am not enough of a motherboard pricing expert to say the price was unreasonable given the features and quality.(5) I went to the Asus webpage to call them for some technical support, and they had numbers listed for practically every country except the United States. I was pretty surprised, seeing approximately 50 numbers for other countries but a blank for the US. Next to the US, it just had a link that said "click here." I clicked and it was broken link. Very odd. When I filled out a technical support email inquiry form (which is painfully extensive and time consuming), an Asus rep got back to me (relatively quickly) with an answer that clearly indicated he wasn't capable of reading, understanding, or troubleshooting in English. So if you have a problem, trying to email them will most likely be a complete waste of your time (unless you really want to see the troubleshooting tips copied and pasted from their website), because they don't speak English. However, it should be noted that other manufacturers probably have the same problem. In the end I solved the problem myself.Rig:Intel Ivy Bridge i7 3770k w/ Corsair H100 watercoolerCorsair 600t Case2x EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti in SLICorsair SSD + 2 SATA3 hard drives16 Gb Corsair DDR3 1600 RamWindows Vista 64 bitI give the board five stars because I am guessing that even though Asus isn't perfect, it is still better than the competition. I also felt sorry for Asus because the other reviewer gave it such an unreasonably low score. I spent a lot of time detailing the negatives (more than the positives) because I am hoping that Asus will fix them when I buy my next motherboard in 5 or 6 years.

Awesome Motherboard but Needs Flash Update
By Brent Foust
This is a great motherboard, worthy of 5 stars! But the product being shipped by Amazon is an old version (ending in 0301) -- it is the first version of the BIOS -- which DOES NOT support the latest Ivy Bridge processor as advertised according to Asus Tech Support (I called multiple times). All subsequent versions (0406 and greater) of this motherboard **do** support the Ivy Bridge processors. (And even this version does, if you know how to download and upgrade its BIOS.)After installing my 3770K CPU, the CPU fan briefly turns on before shutting off then the red CPU light turns on and the motherboard begins repeating two short beeps. I eventually tracked this down to a bad motherboard, so this is most-likely not the norm. This review is for the "working" board. At the end, I will describe the process used to update the BIOS.After getting ahold of this awesome motherboard with a newer BIOS (2nd version, ending in 0406), and getting different RAM, it works perfectly.Although it's missing IDE and Firewire (IEEE 1394), the USB 3.0 and 6Mbps SATA ports are very welcome additions. The wireless support is very nice as well and includes an external ribbon antenna to extend the range.Note: this motherboard is incompatible out of the box with the excellently-priced KomputerBay RAM (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006JO2KXQ) that works so well with Macs (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006JO2KXQ/). There is a nice feature -- a button near the RAM slots -- that attempts to adapt the motherboard to RAM, but I ran out of patience after many hours of attempting to get a bad motherboard to work and purchased Crucial RAM that just worked, instead. This sounds like the perfect feature to get otherwise incompatible RAM to work with the motherboard, as ASUS motherboards are picky about the RAM they work with otherwise.--- Updating the BOS ---For those who wish to order this board and update the BIOS, you may be happy to know that ASUS makes it (almost) easy to update the BIOS of this motherboard with an awesome new feature called FlashBack that allows updating the BIOS even without a CPU or RAM installed:a) download the latest BIOSb) download the Renaming utilityc) place these two in a directory by themselvesd) run the Renaming utilitye) copy the renamed BIOS file (Z77VPTB.CAP) to a thumb drive (all by itself)f) place the thumb drive in the motherboard's green Flashback USB portg) apply power to the motherboard (do not use the computer power-on button)h) press and hold the flashback button on the motherboard for > 3 seconds This button is next to the internal USB sockets. The light will begin to flash slowly, gradually speeding up then go out after a minute. When it stops, it's supposedly updated (if it stays on, there was an error).

Fantastic board!
By luckylogan
Well built board, with loads of ports, features, and utilities.1) USB Flashback BIOS is an excellent feature for updating the bios without fully assembling the PC (carefully read up on it, one of the reviewers here gave good instructions)2) At first you may think you don't have enough external USB 2.0 ports, but there are plenty of internal USB 2.0 ports. Just buy one of these,http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00015Y0FK/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i003) The 2x sets of 2x USB3.0 rears ports use different drivers, one from Intel and one from Asmedia. Install both, get latest ones from the Asus website.4) Board is very finicky on what brand DDR3 memory you use. Get one from Asus' QVL list online. Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB DDR3 1600MHz worked well for me.5) Internal PCI-E and PCI ports are well laid out. I used all but one, including two for double wide (GTX460) Graphics cards in SLI.6) Plenty of fan connectors - two for push-pull CPU fans - how thoughtful of Asus!7) If you want to install your operating system (OS) on a RAID disk, make sure you have a USB2.0 floppy drive. Although, there are ways around it.8) Install OS using the keyboard and mouse on a USB2.0 port or it may not see it. Better yet, use a PS2 keyboard during install for no issues.9) Plenty of room around CPU for a large CPU fan. I have a Thermaltake Frio cooler with push pull fans, and it blocks one of the secondary DRAM ports. But no matter, since I only use two sticks on the primary (blue) DRAM ports.10) Paired with an Intel i5-3570K processor (upgrade from Q6600) the combo gave me a 35% boost in 3Dmark11 score. Thats without upgrading the video cards, insane!!Some minor cons, WiFi GO is a strange feature/add-on board. Have not really been able to make good use of it. And whats with the right angle SATA connectors? Who started that? Just a bad idea. Haven't tried Thunderbolt.
