164gb capable - mmmm, sort of...
By dev-2013
LGA2011! Hoo aah!So LGA2011 motherboards typically offer a couple of big advantages: support for beefy multi-core cpu's and 64gb of ram.The irony here is that getting 64gb of ram to work in this mobo may be impossible.I bought a 64gb kit of corsair memory (CMZ64GX3M8A1600C9) so it's all a matched set, which in theory should minimize any compatibility issues. (different chips can have slight differences in timing when responding to requests; kits are typically tested to ensure that they behave identically)And Corsair is a reputable brand, so I assumed I was doing the 'Right Thing'.And when I boot up, the memory registers fine in the system (ie, it shows up as the full 64gb)But responding to an address doesn't imply data integrity; when you write bits to an address, you expect those same bits to come back when you read that address. And there's a tool that tries to determine if the data you write to memory is the same as the data you'll read back; it's called memtest86. (I'm using v4.20)So memtest86 goes through all of your memory, writing test patterns full of thrilling stuff like FFFFFFFFFF7FFFFF to see if all the little bits in your memory can remember what was put there. And that utility shows that this mobo has issues with memory above 32gb.(short aside: for those who are interested, I'm not trying to overclock the system; as I said, I'm looking for stability. I've even tried knocking down some of the timing parameters to intentionally slow the system to keep the memory interactions stable, but have gotten nowhere with that.)Now if I was just messing around browsing the web or watching a dvd, I wouldn't worry that much about data integrity. You might only get a bad pixel in a video frame which you would never notice, or your system might crash from time to time when it hits one of those bad addresses. But if it's non-critical stuff you can just reboot and it's basically problem solved (until the next time)But I'm a developer, so when I push bits into memory, I expect those bits to come back. Because if bad memory requests lie to my code, that application could crash and I could spend days trying to reproduce and fix a bug that doesn't exist. And that could make my employer (and consequently me) very very unhappy. So anyway, to anyone intending to eventually put 64gb of ram in this board, you might have better luck than me and get it to work.Or you might not.

5Excellent board with minor glitches
By PMS
This is perhaps the best X79 board in the market at present. The bootup is amazingly fast. Comes with a 5-year warranty with registration at the Gigabyte site. The tech support is knowledgeable and friendly. Here are some of the issues I faced. The F2 version of BIOS is temperamental. Upgrading it to F3p resolved the problem. SYS_FAN1 header on my board is half dead. The fan kicks in a few moments after power up and turns only at 200 RPM instead of the rated 700 RPM. Verified the header problem by replacing the original case fan. But sending the board back for this problem is a major jeopardy for me with loss of time, etc. Since the board supports a total of four case fan headers and my computer with liquid cooled CPU and a cooling fan on the graphics card is humming along very cool and quiet, I am holding on to the board for now. One minor shortcoming, in my opinion, is the lack of an IEEE 1394 port. But it is not a show-stopper for me.
