I **LOVE** this motherboard.Believe me when I tell you that I reviewed A LOT of Atom motherboards when building my home NAS box (Feb/March 2011).My standards were high! I wanted to pretty much copy the hardware specs of a Synology DS1010+ (their top of the line model).This is the only Atom mobo I found with a serious ICH9 based chipset providing 6 solid SATA ports!Hardware used / recommended: + A nice case (Chenbro ES34169 Tower - Power supply 120 Watt or Chenbro ES34069 Tower - Power adapter 180 Watt) + A small/cheap sil3132 based eSATA port adapter card, + A small 2.5" boot/system disk (anything >= 8G is fine) + 4x Western Digital 2 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 64 MB Cache WD20EARSYou can add to that an external eSATA connected SATA multiplier disk shoebox such as the great valueRosewill: RSV-S4-X (4 disks) or RSV-S5 (5 disk) or RSV-S8 anything based on a Silicon Image port multiplier chipset will work nicely.Install ubuntu 10.10 or 11.04 server edition (at the time of writing) and you have a 100% ubuntu compatible solutionright out of the box. Note that I create a boot USB thumb drive (only need a 2Gb stick) and booted from that toinstall ubuntu on my system.Resulting system uses 50W in full operation, 21 watt with disk spun down and < 1w in sleep mode.With samba installed, the disks spin up in 10-20 sec when accessing the share.The whole system comes out of sleep and is operational in 30-40 sec when responding to a Wake-on-Lan (WOL)magic packet.Note:The mobo boots so fast that I was having trouble accessing the setup screen.I called the FRIENDLY and COMPETENT tech support folks at supermicro and the recommended resettingthe bios by pulling the battery for 30 seconds. I was making a x86 router with mikrotik routeros and used this motherboard with the matching case Supermicro CSE-502-200B Chassis i am planing on getting another one for a NASall i can say is it just works and get it for any low power thing you need

I own two of these boards (both purchased directly from Amazon). I cannot speak to the other reviewer's experience directly, but the two boards I received were housed in boxes from another mainboard model with a sticker over the top of the other mainboard's model number. They were secured with extra foam that prevented the boards from moving around in the oversized box. I found this odd when I received the initial board and at first I was readying for a return to Amazon, but after inspecting the contents I found everything in order. Maybe SuperMicro doesn't ship a lot of these boards and they reused another set of boxes to reduce cost? Who knows.The main technical issue I encountered with this board was it's very limited support for SODIMMs. I tried 4 sets of SODIMMs (two purchased locally and two pirated from other in-house systems) and none worked. I finally got online with a rep from Crucial with the official SuperMicro specs on the supported SODIMM's specific chip model numbers, and they verified their SODIMM would work. I ordered 2 x 2 GB 256Mx64PC2-5300 CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMMs (from Amazon) and they booted perfectly. I saved myself a lot of grief the second time around and bought one of these DIMMs right out of the gate.Enough with the negatives - this is a phenomenal little board for embedded systems. I use one for a FreeNAS filer and a second for a pfsense firewall (overkill, but I wanted to tackle some of the more advanced capabilities of modules supported by pfsense like snort and HAVT, and I like having standard parts around in case I need to swap components between systems). It's perfect for a file server with 6 on board SATA ports and a pair of NICs. If you're into embedded applications, it has a USB port directly on the motherboard which is convenient for embedded systems like FreeNAS and pfsense that can boot off a USB key. I've had my first board running for about 6 months without issue. I added the second board 5 months later and it too is running fine.I think it's way better than a 2 star board when you look at it's technical capabilities, so it gets 4 stars from me; I dinged it a star for the horrible memory support and a really crummy supported memory matrix on their official site. If you can get past that (and the strange box), it's a great little board that you can use for a variety of embedded systems applications.
