5Best value mini-itx motherboard with 6 SATA ports
By Dougie Fresh
I spent a lot of time over the past year looking for a motherboard to use in a home server build. I wanted six SATA ports in a mini-itx board, which until I found this motherboard, could only be found for a lot more money and/or from manufacturers I do not trust. Lately, ASUS has been my go to manufacturer and once again they have not let me down. This motherboard comes nicely packaged in the very familiar ASUS box with the I/O plate, 2 very nice latching SATA cables, manual and driver disk for Windows. The manual is very well written making it easy to figure out the features of the board with good diagrams for each internal connection. The board itself has a nice blue/black color scheme and is very well laid out with the trademark ASUS fanless heatsink. The USB ports are a bit tight with the SATA ports but in practice they are a perfect fit. There are two 3-pin fan connections, one labelled chassis and one CPU (despite the passive heatsink) which makes it easy to control two fans (or more with the right splitters -- I am controlling 3). There are no USB3 headers and no HDMI port, which for a server build is not important but good to know if using this motherboard as a media PC. The Deluxe version of this motherboard has an HDMI port so if you're hooking this up to a flat panel look for that version. This motherboard has a long list of support memory modules, including the single stick of 4GB DDR3 1333 RAM I installed. It downclocks it to 1066 and since it's a single-channel architecture it doesn't matter, 1 or 2 sticks. That allowed me to put in one 4GB stick for now and still have a slot for later. The single 4GB stick was also cheaper.I installed this board in a Lian Li PC-Q08S case with a 120W picoPSU power supply. So far I've added one 250GB notebook drive, a 2TB drive and a 1.5TB drive. I was able to see everything in the UEFI BIOS. The new graphical BIOS is great, especially all the fan control and boot options. The menus are easy to figure out and have a ton of options. I installed Ubuntu 11.10 which was fully supported without the need for additional drivers. The new Ubuntu UI is very responsive with this motherboard. It also ran Fedora 14 with Amahi HDA very quickly. No additional drivers were needed. The only Unix-style OS I ran into issues with was FreeNAS 8.0.1 which didn't have the Realtek driver needed for the LAN port. This is because it's based on a version of FreeBSD that doesn't natively support Realtek 8111x. I could have downloaded it and installed it (pretty simple) but I didn't want to bother. When running Ubuntu 11.10, I found my power draw, measured using a Kill-A-Watt meter to be around 60W on startup, 30W with normal usage and 3.3W in sleep. My goal of a responsive motherboard with very low power usage has definitely been achieved with this board. I found the fanless heatsink to be warm to the touch under all operations. BIOS temps were around 10-20F over ambient in an open case. The real test though is coming next week. My plan is to install Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011. It will be hosting 5 drives, 7.5TB total, not counting the boot drive. Later, I will add a Ceton InfiniTV tuner card to share with the HTPCs on my network. After I have WHS2011 installed, I'll do a lot more rigorous testing and then comeback and update this review.Overall, and so far, this motherboard has been brilliant. It is plenty fast for my use, has 6 SATA ports and sips electricity. It ran fine with Ubuntu and Fedora. I expect the same with WHS (though I expect I'll be breaking out the driver CD for that one). Hopefully my WHS install disk will show up soon.Build:Lian-Li PC-Q08S mini-itx caseWD Scorpio Blue 250GB 2.5" laptop hard drive (OS)WD 1.5TB HDD, Seagate 2TB HDD (data)2 x Samsung 2TB HDD (future)Kingston DDR3 1333 4GB RAMpicoPSU-WI-32 120W DC-DC power supply with 18.5V/6.5A laptop adapter-- Update: 20-Oct-2011 --I have Windows Home Server 2011 installed now and it's working very well. I ran into some glitches where the installers on the CD would not work because it did not recognize WHS2011 as a valid operating system. I had to update the drivers manually. I also had to grab the Realtek 8111E driver from the Realtek website because the driver on the CD was having issues. The LAN would drop and I'd have to click "diagnose" to get it to fix itself and reconnect. The problem seems to have gone away with the driver v7.48.823.2011 from 23-Aug-2011. It's been up for 15hr 30min now without dropping. I am getting around 50MB/s transfers copying data from my WHSv1 machine to this new WHS2011 machine which is very good IMO.Some other observations: the passive heatsink gets surprisingly hot to the touch. That surprises me with an 18W TDP. The case is open right now so I will be curious the temperature once I close things up and have the proper airflow going through. Power usage is really good. I've seen it idle around 20W and it's using around 40W during large file transfers as configured above. If this were configured as a media PC with say just a SSD this could easily be driven with a 60W PSU. So far, it's living up to everything I wanted in a motherboard for a home server (even though it's a desktop board).

5Greate for my Ubuntu Precise 12.04 install
By Mimosa Consulting
I installed this Motherboard in a In-Win Case BP671.200BL Mini-ITX Mini Tower Black 200W 1/0/(2) Bay USB HD Audio Installed Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) 64-bit, using on-board video, audio. The install was perfect and I have absolutely NO issues with ASUS or Ubuntu. The board is fast, energy efficient and contains one PCI-e video slot for an additional card (I use on-board video). The 2 of 6 SATA3 ports are used for 2 hard drives (one is 6gps drive). I installed 8GB RAM and have never seen my swap space used. I'd purchase this board again. This was a trouble free install with Ubuntu and my case choice could never be better. ANY Asus boards are excellent choices. This was a simple, no brain, build that absolutely works perfectly.

This board arrived DOA. To confirm the board was bad I tried two different PSUs, four different brands of RAM, and two different monitors -- both the DVI and VGA ports. It powers up, but there' no video. I will update this review when I get a replacement.Update 8/18/12: Received the RMA, and it booted right up. I love the EFI interface. Uses 37W load and 29W idle as a home server. Not bad considering my E8400 IP cam server averages 80W and 120W peak.
