I bought this to make a BSD or Linux NAS (no fans). The CPU runs cooler than the chipset. The 865 chipset uses DDR ram. The on-board NIC is an Intel Pro 100 VE. It doesn't work with FreeBSD and Centos. Cannot disable in BIOS, "blacklisted" the e100 module. Used a another NIC card instead. Otherwise, it works well enough.

I had a bunch of spare parts lying around and wanted to throw together a cheap system.This Board did the trick. Only a couple of problems...the Driver CD only contains the Intel Chipset Driver Utility, which does not install the Ethernet driver, which is an Intel Pro 100 VE. You can download that driver from Intel's support page. The BIOS is very slow to load, and a BIOS update is available on Intel's website, but I have not been able so far to boot to DOS and load it, so I can't comment on any improvement. Runs Vista just fine, and with 2 MB of installed ram and a 4GB flash drive for ReadyBoost it is quite snappy and runs my USB TV tuner, videos and MP3s with no problems. A decent multimedia machine for cheap.

This is a great bargain if you want to build a low-cost PC for basic computing tasks. It doesn't draw much power and will run many Linux distros with no problem. A previous reviewer mentioned trouble with getting a Windows driver for the on-board network card. The Linux distros I ran had no trouble identifying the network card and automatically installing a driver that enabled Ethernet functionality.Drivers for Windows XP are at [...]The Intel download center also has drivers for other versions of Windows.My only complaint was that I couldn't get the motherboard to boot from a USB flash drive. The BIOS is set up to allow for booting from USB, but the USB ports seem to be skipped in the boot up process. But it will boot easily from a CD.All in all, a perfectly serviceable motherboard that will probably serve most users quite well.
