5Great motherboard for a great AMD A-10 APU
By Ellie
When I buy products on Amazon I'm guided by other reviewers who give their opinion on a product. In looking for a mobo for the AMD A-10 to use to best highlight its many good points, I found this: the MSI socket FM2/AMD A85 with the DDR3 for the Ripjaws 2133MHz core memory I ordered and SATA 6Mbps for the SSD memory I used.I had zero problems with this mobo. The first PC I built a few years back was also with an MSI board. MSI is a Taiwan company that designs and produces high quality electronic devices. This board is a good example. It comes with a thorough manual, cables to attach your DVD and HD/SSD to the board, an installation disk that will get you up even if you are not on the internet for Windows 7 to find the drivers for you to take care of all the parts of the PC that need a software interface between the hardware and the operating system.MY BUILD:1) MSI FM2-A85XA-G65 motherboard (that this review is about and which is selling for a few dollars less than I got it for - the price should drop more with time).2) AMD A-10 APU - what AMD calls their Advanced Processing Unit which has both a quad core CPU and a moderately powerful graphics processor on the same die that you are going to place in its socket on the mobo - an easy install by just lifting the lever and gently placing it in the socket with the arrows matching - it can go into the socket only one way - no need to force it. Then bring down the lever to hold it in place until you attach the best heat sink fan you can find.3) My heat sink was the Zalman CNPS 9700 LED, an impressive looking unit which fits both AMD FM2 and Intel chips with the provided parts. From actual measurement it keeps my A-10 APU about 10 to 15 degrees centigrade cooler than the stock HS fan provided by AMD. That fan got up to 60 degrees centigrade while idling!!! 85 degrees when doing anything hard like a complete disk security scan. Hint: plug in the heat sink fan before you place it on the APU (which should have been coated with a heat transfer paste). The Zalman model brought the idle temps down to 43 degrees centigrade. However, besides being a b**ch to install (all heat sinks are), it lacks a four wire connection to the mobo so as to be able to let the bios or OS control its speed according to the CPU temperature. So, it is not what is called a PWM fan - with 4 wires to let the system control the fan speed. Instead it has a Rube Goldberg wired remote that you take out from the interior and attach with a sticky pad to your case exterior. It has a dial for you to set the speed level manually. Great. So last decade. That's why I suggested you look long and hard for a highly recommended 4 wire fan like some of the Thermaltake models. Good thing about the Zalman: easy to apply the CPU heat sink paste they give you. I just read some reviews of CPU thermal pastes and, frankly, there's hardly a dimes worth of difference amongst them.4)Graphics card: MSI R6770. Why, when the AMD A-10 APU has a graphics chip? Well, I was under the impression that any 6000 series graphics card would link its graphics power with that of the A-10 and I'd have a super setup. Wrong. You need the HD 6670 card for that. In its favor, Windows Experience Index for the graphics section is 7.3! not too shoddy for a card costing under US $100. It needs one 6 pin power connector and it cannot be hardware linked with another card. But it sips power gently so my 520 Watt Corsair with modular cables won't strain a muscle with it or from the TDP (total design power) of 100 watts that the AMD A-10 can draw. No complaints about this MSI R6770 card except, as mentioned, I have seen no evidence that it is linking its graphics power with the APU's graphics power. The card uses two slots and is relatively quiet. Drivers on the installation disk and from AMD.5)My core memory is GSKILL Ripjaws DDR3 2133MHz PC3-17000 in the form of 4GB sticks. I got four of them to give me about 16GB. I went into the BIOS to change them from the initial 1600MHz memory speed the BIOS gave them and I changed it to the 2133MHz that they seem to be able to handle very well in this MSI FM2 motherboard. My Windows Experience Index went up a notch from 7.3 to 7.4 for the memory speed rating after I increased this Ripjaws core memory speed. And, by the way, the heat sinks on the Ripjaws memory sticks did not get in the way of the Zalman CPU heatsink fins.6) Drive: Samsung 830 series with 64GB and SATA 6Gbps. No problemo with that. The mobo and the Windows 7 install saw that and installed the OS in record time. It's fast. How fast? My Windows Experience Index for this drive is 7.9 - YES!!! The drive is usually the slowest part of the system when it is an HD, not solid state like this one. It's the single best thing you can do to give some fire to your system in ordinary use. And, yes, I intend to get a larger drive to use as well - maybe a 10,000rpm drive or an SSD of 240GB since they are falling price now. I recommend the Intel SSD. They give you good SSD management software and have a good reputation. I use one in my other desktop.7) Case: Rosewill Challenger. Nice case, roomy, no rough edges, room for routing cables behind the mobo, three fans with room for a few more, and it costs hardly US $50 online.8) PCI Express X1 wireless N Dual Band 450 Mbps WiFi adapter made by TP-http://amzn.com/dp/B009HP42IU/?tag={httpdriverinv-20}. Drop it in, run the little half size CD with the install files, and it comes up and shows you all the WiFi routers in the neighborhood. Select yours, and get online. It's a beauty - has three antennas and it is dual band 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.9) I installed a SYBA PCI card which gives me five USB 2.0 ports for all my current USB stuff.10) In addition to the usual ports on the Rosewill case for USB 2.0, USB 3.0, audio, drive lights, etc, I installed a Rosewill SuperSpeed Memory Card Reader in the front panel 3 1/2 inch opening.11) Haven't forgotten the Corsair 520 watt power supply. It just works. No complaints. No loud fan noise. Good voltages as show in the BIOS and with other software measurement programs. Another good brand of PS is the SEASONIC brand. Modular cables are best. Spend US $50 to $100 - don't get the cheapies on the market.I have a little more to add later. I'll post some photos of the installation. RECOMMEND this MSI Socket FM2/AMD motherboard highly.

4First MSI board and i hope it isn't my last!
By Michael S Lee
I just bought this board for a new pc build, I probably didn't need it but sometimes you get drunk and find yourself on amazon thinking hey I should build a new computer. Anyways this board looks real good which I personally don't care but i know a lot of people do so figured I would mention it.The reason I choose this board was because it has a display port and was cheaper than most the comparables. I also liked that the board had two pci slots, which I see as a plus, most comparable boards have an extra pci-e slot in there place, to me this makes no sense if I am going to run 3 sli cards i going to run something a little higher end than an apu just saying. On the other hand I have a lot of old pci boards that I can through in if I would like. The included software is lacking at best but since you don't have to use it I only knocked off 1 star. For those who care you can pick and choose what you want but every time I turn on my computer the MSI's updater tries to install the ones you didn't pick to previously install and I cant figure out a way to make it stop other than getting rid of all the utilities.

5Great motherboard
By The Doctor
I recently built two systems using this motherboard and had no problems of any kind with it. You should check MSI's website for BIOS updates from time to time but it is a very solid, stable board.
