Product Description
The Arduino Ethernet Shield allows an Arduino board to connect to the internet. It is based on the Wiznet W5100 ethernet chip. The Wiznet W5100 provides a network (IP) stack capable of both TCP and UDP. It supports up to four simultaneous socket connections. Use the Ethernet library to write sketches which connect to the internet using the shield.
The new Ethernet shield now includes a micro SD card connector, it is MEGA compatible and an on-board reset controller.
The ethernet shield connects to an Arduino board using long wire-wrap headers which extend through the shield. This keeps the pin layout intact and allows another shield to be stacked on top.
Arduino uses digital pins 10, 11, 12, and 13 (SPI) to communicate with the W5100 on the ethernet shield. These pins cannot be used for general i/o.

This SainSmart shield is very inexpensive, but worked with my Arduino UNO R3 just fine. The shield was a bit difficult to get plugged up -- the second header is slightly offset so it doesn't align 100% (but still works). The existing Ethernet samples in the Arduino IDE worked without any modification, and I was up and running within minutes. The SD card examples just required setting the pin correctly (pin 4).Beyond being the most difficult Shield I have had to plug in (because of the slight alignment issue), this is a fine product. I have also found it will not fit in the Arduino enclosure that was designed to take something like an UNO and Ethernet Shield. The ethernet port is slightly offset and will not allow the case to close around it without bending and forcing. So, not a precisely cloned layout.By ordering it from Amazon, I could get it shipped quickly, but SainSmart also sells it from their store in China. Ordering items from China can take weeks for delivery, but if you are not in a hurry, it saves money. (SainSmart had this shield on sale for $17.99 with free shipping to the USA, but example, but I have Amazon Prime so I preferred to get it in two days for a few dollars more.)I had never worked with Ethernet before, but after a few evenings I managed to port my old 1983 *ALL RAM* BBS from Extended Color BASIC (on a Radio Shack Color Computer) to Arduino C, and then modify it to work over Ethernet. i just tested the basics but so far it seems to work just like the more expensive versions. no complaints yet. quality of construction is good too. no cheap connectors as on so many of the cheaper boards. the SD card slot is a nice push push that works well unlike the sloppy loose ones that let the card fall out.
