4Gigabyte GA-880GM-D2H - Has all of the features I needed
By bill704
Warning to all who are considering purchase of this motherboard based on the pictured & specs listed above, Gigabyte has removed the ATA-133 IDE & Floppy drive connector from the Rev 3 version of this GA-880GM-D2H motherboard, not a deal breaker for me personally, I'll try to upload some pics. This is not going to be a motherboard review per se, but more on what that led me to buy this motherboard.Wants/ needs:I needed a secondary/spare computer that is relatively energy efficient but has the potential to become my main computer should that machine go down, in other words, I wasn't looking to build a second gaming rig and put up with the accompanying high energy usage. (FYI - My gaming computer pulls close to 300 watts while gaming)My other driving need is that I wanted a machine that will run SpinRite without using too much electricity. Let me expand on that, SpinRite is the BEST program I've found to repair/maintain, recover data from, spinning hard disk drives (HDD), SpinRite is kind of expensive but it just plain works, Google it and find out for yourself. Why I chose this motherboard:I wanted a motherboard that supported the newer more energy efficient processors out today. Sure, I could have built an Intel machine with a Core i3 processor that's directly comparable to the AMD Phenom II X2 560 Black Edition Processor but Intel's on-board graphics is weaker than whats in the AMD camp plus the Intel chips & motherboards are slightly more expensive. The other reason I chose this motherboard was that it came with the normal (old-school) BIOS, most of the motherboards that support the Intel chips are coming with the new UEFI BIOS. SpinRite works well with normal (old-school) BIOS to dig down deep into the mechanical function of reading & writing to the sectors of a spinning disk, eventually SpinRite will be revised to work with the UEFI BIOS but I can't wait for that, I have HDDs that need that "SpinRite insurance" against data corruption. The install:I re-purposed an older (from 2004) Lian-Li PC-65B (black w/ window) Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Case, purchased (4) Noctua NF-R8 Raised-Blade design and SSO Bearing Fan - Retail to replace the old and noisy original fans (these are excellent fans and kind of overkill for my application), replaced the bad power supply with a new one, replaced the old PATA DVD drive with a Liteon iHAS324 24X DVD-RW SATA Optical Disk Drive (because this motherboard don't have a PATA connector), removed the old floppy drive (because this motherboard don't have a floppy connector).I installed the AMD Phenom II X2 560 Processor, Black Edition (HDZ560WFGMBOX) (TDP 80 watts) with no problems, the only extra steps taken was to remove the factory thermal compound from the CPU heat-sink and the North Bridge heat-sink (that's the heat-sink with the blue Gigabyte logo directly below the CPU) and replace it with some Noctua thermal compound I had from previous builds.I ordered and installed 8GB (2 x 4GB) of Corsair Vengeance Blu 8 GB (2X4 GB) PC3-12800 1600mHz DDR3 240-Pin SDRAM Dual Channel Memory Kit CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B (DDR3 1600) because I plan on running a 64 bit version of Windows 7.I re-purposed an older (from 2004 also) Western Digital Raptor 10K RPM 74 GB HDD and used it as the boot drive.I re-purposed a Kingwin KF91-BK Serial ATA HDD mobile rack - black and mounted the boot drive into it (you have to mount your HDD inside of a tray). I also ordered and installed another HDD rack, the Vantec EZ Swap 4 3.5-Inch Aluminum Removable Trayless SATA Hard Drive Rack with LCD and Fan MRK-401ST-BK (Black) (this one is tray-less, you just insert the bare drive into it and shut the door).Running & testing:Installing Windows 7 Home Premium from an Win-XP upgrade is painful and time consuming (downloading all of the security updates took longer than the assembly), but all in all it was worth the time because Win-7 is rock solid. Upon POST the BIOS enumerated all 8GB of RAM, after start-up, Windows saw all of the RAM also (of course some of it was given over to the on-board graphics), but, so far so good.Check the CPU temperature at idle - 21ºC ~ 24ºC, my P3 International P4400 Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor shows a 57 ~ 59 watts used at idle. Ran Prime95 as a stress test for 1 hour and checked the CPU temperature at full load - 40ºC ~ 41ºC, my meter shows 113 watts used at full load. While running SpinRite on a HDD, watts used were 92 ~ 94, not too bad. Conclusion:The Gigabyte GA-880GM-D2H motherboard has been running for a couple of days now (running SpinRite on a 1 TB HDD) and it's quite stable at stock settings (I've not tweaked any settings), the on-board graphics is OK but you can tell that dragging around the Windows 7 Aero shell is a full time job for the ATI Radeon HD 4250 graphics engine.Like the other reviewer mentioned, there is a larger than normal gap between the motherboard rear panel connectors and the I/O shield but it has not affected me in any way. I would give this motherboard 5 stars for how stable and predictable it is, I removed a star because the new revision (Rev 3) of this board was missing the ATA-133 & floppy connectors (no big loss though). Thanks for reading my ramblings.Bill704

5FLASH CMOS IF MOTHERBOARD CRASHES
By M. MCKOY
I almost returned this board because it "died" when I was loading the drivers. I loaded Windows 7. I then unlocked the 4th core on my AMD X3 cpu. I then loaded the Gigabyte drivers when the pc shut down. I thought it was restarting to finish loading the drivers but it never restarted. I kept hitting the power button and nothing happened. I was very very angry as I started to recall all the negative reviews. I left it and went to bed to calm my nerves. I woke up the next morning and hit the power button a few times and nothing happened. Nothing. I then recalled a review that I read while researching the MB before purchase. The reviewer advised to clear CMOS by shorting the pins on the MB whenever you make changes to your system. I was skeptical but gave it a try with a knife. I heard a very faint static discharge and thought, oh no!. I then removed and changed the battery on the MB to be sure. I did nothing else. Sure enough it booted as if nothing was wrong with it. It now works like a charm. I haven't changed the option in the advanced bios for unlocking the 4th core. I guess it was locked for a reason. Anyway, I probably wouldn't notice any real world gains from the additional core since I can still overclock the processor. FLASH YOUR BIOS/SHORT THE PINS AFTER MAKING HARDWARE CHANGES. Thanks to reviewer who originally posted this.

It's a cheap mobo. What more could you want? If you're building a budget computer, this is the part for you.
