The Intel Atom platform has received mixed praise over the years, considered by many to be a budget HTPC or netbook solution. However, it is far more versatile than people give credit. In my work, we use the platform in many of our embedded research applications because of its low initial and operating costs, support for consumer-off-the-shelf components and wide-range operating system support.After reviewing architectural changes in Intel's latest line-up of Atom CPUs, I jumped at the opportunity to replace my aging DNS / E-Mail servers with low-power Atom-based solutions. Using this motherboard, I now host all of my DNS and E-Mail services on two machines that use under 25W of power under peak load! As an added bonus, the new servers are completely silent and take up a fraction of the space the old servers did. I will outline the primary factors that lead to my purchase below.Advanced Intel Atom Features----------------------------The CPU included with this board is the most advanced and energy efficient Atom to date. It includes Enhanced Speed Step (considerably lower idle TDP vs. previous Atom CPUs), as well as Hyper Threading (it can execute up to 4 simultaneous in-order threads under the right conditions) and supports x86-64 (> 4 GiB of RAM). The motherboard specs claim a limit of 4 GiB of memory (which is true in a 32-bit operating system without PAE), but I can confirm that it can actually use 8 GiB (2x4 GiB DDR3 SO-DIMMs) of memory (possibly more).Integrated Power Supply-----------------------This motherboard effectively has a built-in PicoPSU! As long as you only intend to power one or two SATA drives, the built-in DC port can save you $20-40 USD on a dedicated PSU. The motherboard includes one SATA power cable which you wire directly to the motherboard, and can also power any mSATA-based SSD. Although the package does NOT include a DC "power brick," you can pick-up a PicoPSU compatible external DC supply for as little as $10 USD. Of course if you need more power, the motherboard supports traditional ATX power supplies as well.Designed for Passive Cooling----------------------------Despite hosting the most powerful Intel Atom CPU money can buy, this board is perfectly happy running in a 100% passively cooled configuration. If you opt to use an external DC power brick, you can eliminate the noise and heat associated with an internal fan-based PSU. Naturally since the board is designed with passive cooling in mind, it sports a rather large CPU heatsink. Fortunately, the heatsink has the same height profile as the rear I/O shield; it should fit in most Mini-ITX cases without any fuss.Native mSATA Support--------------------Another really nice feature is the ability to plug an mSATA SSD directly onto the board. Keep in mind, however, that doing so will leave only 1 of the 2 traditional on-board SATA ports functional. If you need 3 or more SATA devices you will need to purchase an add-on SATA controller (even if one of the devices uses the mSATA interface). If you opt to use an mSATA SSD for mass storage and do not need an optical drive, you can actually run this board in a chassis that has no internal drive bays!Misc. Notes----------- * PowerVR-based integrated GPUI purchased the board to construct a low-power Linux server, so the integrated GPU was not a deciding factor in my purchase. However, it is important to note that Intel has actually ditched their own first-party GPU in this system and licensed a more powerful and energy efficient PowerVR chipset. The downside to Intel's move to PowerVR is limited driver support in Linux (particularly if you opt to run a 64-bit kernel). Many barebone builders suggest you run this system using a 32-bit Linux kernel, which of course imposes a 4 GiB memory limit (making the fact that the board is ACTUALLY capable of supporting 8 GiB of RAM a moot point). * Lacks an integrated WiFi / BluetoothFor HTPC builds, WiFi and Bluetooth are often desirable. With the money you save on a power supply and chassis, you can easily afford to install something like an Intel 6230 WiFi / Bluetooth controller (and still have 1 Full/Half-Mini PCI Express Card Slot and 1 PCI Express 1x Slot free).Bottom Line: Genuine Low-Cost Computing---------------------------------------The CPU uses less power than previous Atom CPUs that ran at lower clock rates and includes a more powerful / energy efficient integrated GPU (provided you use Microsoft Windows or 32-bit Linux). While the more efficient CPU saves you money on operating costs, build costs are also kept low by the fact that the board includes a power supply and supports mSATA, which allows you to put this board in some of the lowest profile / least expensive Mini ITX cases on the market. As a bonus, the combination of chipset, CPU and physical motherboard can actually use MORE memory than Intel claims (confirmed support for 8 GiB).

I've been running this board for almost a month now with a 8GB RAM, a 32GB Crucial M4 mSATA SSD and 32-bit Ubuntu 12 LTS. The OS installed smoothly and uses all 8GB, a few tweaks to the configuration put temporary files on RAM disk and reduced the cycles on the SSD. (See tips on howtogeek.com) The totally silent box runs uTorrent server and will take over some other household duties that need to run 24/7 without making a dent in the monthly electricity bill. The biggest problem with this board is finding a case small enough to take advantage of its efficient use of space, Intel includes a half-height connector shield and a no-drive system's outline can stay inside of that. Two on-board serial ports and a parallel port can be brought out for compatibility with older peripherals. Graphics are adequate for desktop work, but not up to video which I tried just for fun.

The only good thing about this Mobo is that it makes a low power server under w7/linux.However, believe it or not, there are not and probably won't be Windows 8 drivers:[...]Also, there are no easily installable Linux drivers (unless you are willing to hack a lot) .Shame on Intel for ceasing support this quick.Next time, I will stick with a company that makes their own graphic HW to avoid this situation.
