5Excellent performance; low cost
By The Irish Patient
[Note 4/11/2012: BioStar released its new line of Ivy Bridge Z77 motherboards last week. As good as my BioStar TZ68A+ has been for me, it is now an obsolete product for new purchasers. I can't recommend it anymore unless you can buy it on closeout for $70 or less with shipping. The direct replacement would be the new BioStar TZ77B. I don't see it yet here on Amazon, but it's available for about $110 elsewhere after rebate plus shipping.]I've had this MB for about three months. It's being used with two Crucial SSDs in RAID0 (Intel RST) and 2x4GB of GSkill DDR3 2133 memory. The OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 courtesy of the Microsoft Dreamspark program. I'm using an Intel Pentium G620 temporarily until Ivy Bridge becomes available. The TZ68A+ is, of course, based on Intel's top of the line Z68 chipset. In this regard, the two SATA 6.0 headers are native to the Z68 chipset. That may seem like a no-brainer, so be aware that some much more expensive Z68 motherboards implement their SATA 6.0 headers via a Marvell controller that has unacceptably high latency. Random read/write performance on the latest generation SSDs will always be disappointing when the SSDs have to work through a separate onboard controller.Native USB 3.0 won't be available until Ivy Bridge motherboards become available. The BioStar TZ68A+ features two rear panel USB 3.0 ports implemented via a high performing ASmedia controller. Other nice touches are the full featured BIOS, the GUI overclocking utility, and VIRTU.The price is a bargain as long as you can live within the MB's limitations:(1) For better or worse, the TZ68A+ includes support for a legacy parallel port and a legacy serial port. You won't find external connectors for these, but there are headers on the bottom of the motherboard as installed. You just need to buy a expansion slot cover that provides the external connectors plus a cable to header plugs. Personally, I think it's better to say goodbye to some of these legacy ports. So check the BIOS to make sure that the parallel and serial headers are disabled electrically.(2) There are two x16 physical slots, but the second slot is only x4 electrical. So, this MB isn't a good choice if you need to run two video cards, even though both x16 slots are spaced to accept a double wide card. Given that a single Nvidia 570 graphics card is in the $350 range, I don't see an issue here. If you can afford $700 for graphics cards, maybe you shouldn't be looking for a budget motherboard.(3) If you do put a double wide card in the second PCIe x16 slot (x4 electrical), then you can't use the onboard audio header.(4) Additional expansion slots are limited to two PCI and one PCIe x1. I would have liked to see one additional PCIe slot given that this is an ATX board.(5) Actually, this board is slightly smaller along its upper edge, as mounted, than a standard ATX board. This is not a big deal, but some of the screw holes for mounting won't match up to the stand offs on a standard ATX mid-tower case. Enough screw holes will match up to make a safe and sturdy build. Just use your fingertips to support the back of the board while installing the RAM and 24 pin power cable.(6) The rear panel I/O ports don't include Firewire, e-SATA, or DisplayPort. Also, there isn't a header for Firewire if your case has a front panel port. You'll need to install a cheap PCI expansion card if you need Firewire for an older camcorder.(7) The TZ68A+ has a total of 8 USB ports: two rear panel USB 3.0, two rear panel USB 2.0, and two headers for two USB 2.0 each. I think this is enough, but some reviewers don't.

5Working great!
By rohitp
Bought this item in Nov 2011 during the thanksgiving sale. This was my first computer assembly and was a little nervous. But this board worked great the first time I plugged it in and has given me no troubles since then. It even recognized my wireless mouse and keyboard and the BIOS has a nice UI.
