5Do Your Homework . Install with Care. E-ATX Form Factor!
By Patrick Mcnelis
I recently purchased this motherboard as part of gaming system rebuild I am doing. I rebuild my gaming computer every three years or so, and I try to go with close to the top end when I do, to increase longevity. There was really nothing wrong with my old setup, in fact it would last the average user probably another 5 years or so, barring any unforseen radical changes in software architecture. But I wanted to upgrade...I had the itch.I knew I wanted the Ivy Bridge i5 3570K. Specs for the i5 are so close to the i7 it's ridiculous to spend the extre $120 for the latter just for hyperthreading that most software does not support...yet. With that in mind, I wanted a motherboard that would last for years, and be more than capable of upgrading to the i7 when the change makes more sense (and the i7 is much cheaper). Having had great success with Gigabyte in the past, I looked at their Z77 line up. I compared with other brands including the other big Z77 maker at the moment, Asus, and came away with the G1.Sniper 3 as my choice in the end. There are lots of features that you can only seem to find all on one motherboard only on the G1. Sniper 3. And whether I use them all immediately or not, I like having the ability to expand later when I do want to use them.However...The G1,Sniper 3 is an E-ATX motherboard. It is about 1 inch wider than a standard ATX motherboard. I didn't realize this when I confirmed my credit card payment...by the time I realized the issue, it was too late. I thought I did my homework, but I failed to consider form factor. D'oh! If you are using a Mid-Tower case, odds are it will NOT fit this board at all. Mid Towers come in a range of sizes, however, and the largest may fit, but you may need to do some modifications to make it work. If you like a challenge and aren't sqweemish about cutting into your computer case, this might work for you. Even if you are using a Full Tower, odds are it is NOT E-ATX compliant. There again, you can likely make it work if you are willing to do a little modification.Which is what I did...Luckily for me, I have an Ultra Aluminus mid-tower case. Like I said earlier, if your mid-tower case is large enough, you can pull this off. The Aluminus is a very large "mid-tower" case...other brands would call a case of similar size a "full-tower", so check...you may be able to make this work. Aluminum is incredibly easy to work with for case modding...just need tin snips, patience, and a plan. The motherboard tray in my case, like with most cases from a few years ago, is only rated for ATX and smaller, but there is actually still plenty of room to squeeze in an E-ATX motherboard...with a little modification. I had to cut the verticle lip from the trailing edge of the motherboard tray, so that no metal would make contact with the underside of the motherboard and cause a short. Some black electrical tape to dress the edges and protect wiring from being cut on the sharp edge did the trick. Carefully rerouting the cables from the drives and the power supply also helped make the install relatively painless...it also inproved airflow considerably...why hadn't I done a better job of that in the past? There isn't as much room in there as I would like, but nothing is touching anything that it shouldn't be touching. One issue that is worth mentioning...the front panel audio connection is about as far from the front panel audio as is possible on this board. If your front panel audio cable will not reach the bottom rear of your case, it isn't going to be able to be plugged in to this motherboard. If that is important for you, you may want to consider another motherboard.

4Irritating problem.
By Ricki
I am not a gamer, I purchased this board to be used as the heart of my Media Server and choose it for its audio implementation (Creative Recon3Di). My configuration consists of a 1050 watt Seasonic Power Supply, 16 Gb of RAM , 3770K Intel CPU, 180 GB Intel 520 SSD and two 7200 rpm Seagate HD (both SATA III) plus the G1.Sniper 3.The Bad:When the board goes to sleep, a third of times it misbehaves, sometimes it wakes up to a distorted screen (double images, ghosts, flicker) and it could take a few minutes to recover, others the screen remains black and I need to either power down or reboot for it to recover. I was told that it might be faulty memory and replaced it (because I am using the built-in HDMI which using the part of the system memory), only to find the same issue. For me it might be an HDCP problem with the G1 because the only thing that has changed in my chain is the motherboard and did not experienced this behavior with my three previous motherboards. I also updated the BIOS (at the moment is F6a) and it did not help (If I don't let the board sleep I don't experience this)My Server is on 24/7, If I disregard the problem that happens when it goes to sleep I may say the machine behaves beautifully but reality is that is a bother that it does not wake up as it should. I also tried setup the screen saver to a "Blank Screen" instead of going to sleep but then it does not come back from it but the computer seem to be operational if I press keys and it shuts down properly if I press the power button (you can see the activity with the PC LEDS so I am sure that the PC is not frozen. it also keeps on feeding music or videos if I request from the other PCs, it simply does not show video in its screen). I could educate myself to turn it off and then on every time I need the screen but.. why should I? when for years I have not been doing it and the server behaved as it should? As I said in the beginning one of the reason I went with this board was the audio stage (a Creative Labs implementation, solid capacitors) but the optical output is limited to 24bit/96K instead of 24bit/192K (I would like to add that previous Gigabyte boards I used do support 24/192 so I don't understand why this one doesn't or at the very least they don't mention it anywhere in its description) I have several 176.4K and 192K files so that mean that they have to be down sampled by the motherboard before they are fed to my D/A that is going to up sampled them to 384K (not a fan of extra conversions if I can avoid them). This may not apply to most people's experience that may only use the analog outputs but for those that might have the same application in mind this might be relevant if they happen to have Hi-res files greater than 96k.The Good:Easy overclocking with its proprietary utility, just select an option and let the board do its magic) and if it fails all you have to do is press a button in the motherboard and try another setting.Good transcoding. My server feeds two computers, one smartphone and two tablets and although they are not all pulling data at the same time (max 3 at a time at worst) I don't experience problems for buffering and have PlayOn setup for highest quality. I guess most of this is because of the Intel CPU combination with this board. The audio stage although a disappointment for me for lack of 24/192 sounds very good with the rates it supports, well better than the Gigabyte H67 and Z68 based boards I used before. In combination with the 3770K video quality takes a leap against previous Motherboards. Conclusion:Some may say that using this motherboard for a Media Server is overkill, I don't have anything against use of mini-ATXs configurations created specifically for HTPC applications but the main issue for me is that they don't have expandability, if you want to upgrade to a better processor, more memory or better audio.. You are done! most only have one pci-e slot (at best) but I do understand that money, power consumption and space is a very good reason to go this way but they are going to choke when serving media to other machines.Could I solve my video problem using a video card? I might, what about better audio through a better audio card?.. sure, but I don't want to be forced into expending more at this moment of what I already have to ignore a problem with my G1.I believe that for most people, who have bought this motherboard for gaming and have invested a good amount of money in high-end video cards, will never notice this problem. I would like to add that I have not experienced any BSOD and the G1 behaves 99% of the time. I take a star away for the issues I mention that might only be a consideration for any other user that have the same application in mind. The audio issue I might learn to live with it because the quality of sound is well better than with previous boards at the supported rates but the video problem is a deal breaker for me so I am returning this motherboard. This might be a defect for my particular MB but I am afraid of exchange it and get the same problem, this might be addressed with a future BIOS update but after almost a month I prefer to try another model/brand.Thank you for staying with me and I hope I did not bore you.

5Gigabyte G1 Sniper 3 Mother Board
By Randy
I have built quite a few systems with various mother boards and I do have to say that the G1 Sniper 3 mother board is very feature rich and has made my latest personal computer build absolutely fun to put together. Performance wise this mother board gets a rock solid 5 stars. There is not really anything bad about this board except the price could be $100.00 dollars cheaper. If I had to grip about anything I would say two things:1) All of the Sata plugs should be SATA 6Gb/s connectors - their all backwards compatible - get rid of the SATA 3Gb/s connectors2) The same can be said about the USB connectors - make them all USB 3.0 and get rid of the USB 2.0 after all these are backwards compatible too. There was not enough USB ports on back so I bought a Plugable USB 2.0 10 Port Hub (with Power Adapter) for $25.95 to give me the 10 extra USB 2.0 ports I wanted.Everything about this mother board was great - some patience is needed while setting it up and getting your configuration correct - memory timing, CPU overclocking (what a breeze it is with this board), and GPU overclocking was very friendly too.Currently the G1 Sniper 3 has let me overclock my CPU to 4.5Ghz on air cooling with ease - no I don't plan on overclocking anymore, but yes I am sure it can go a lot higher. My only real problem I had was with the memory I used - I had to go in and manually set it up since it did not work in XMP mode. This was a problem of the memory though not the mother board, I just had to relax the memory timings a little and presto magic everything works great. My personal opinion would be to use Corsair 16 GB Vengeance Blue Low Profile 1600mhz PC3-12800 240-pin Dual Channel DDR3 Memory Kit 16 Dual Channel Kit - CML16GX3M4A1600C9B, just buy to kits for 32GB of memory. I put in 1 kit to test and it worked flawlessly.System Specs:......................................................................NZXT Phantom White CaseGigabyte G1 Sniper 3 Mother BoardIntel i5-3570 CPUCooler Master Hyper 212 Plus CPU CoolerKomputerbay 32GB DDR3 1600MHz RamTwo Galaxy GeForce GTX 660 Ti GC 2 GB in SLISanDisk Extreme SSD 120 GB SSDOCZ-AGILITY3 60 GB SSDTwo WD Caviar Black 1 TB SATA III Hard DrivesTwo Asus 24xDVD-RW DrivesKingWin Lazer PSU 1000 WattsHannspree HL269DPB 26" LED MonitorLogitech G9x Laser MouseLogitech Gaming Keyboard G105Cyber Snipa Tracer Mouse PadWindows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit
